At the heart of the Planetary Neural Network lies a smart app that thinks, scores, and rewards all on the edge. As the backbone of Ecosphere Prime’s decentralized climate intelligence infrastructure, the Ecosphere Smart App is rewriting how environmental data is validated, valued, and tokenized.
Why We Are Building a Smart App for the Edge
Environmental data is only as valuable as it is timely, trusted, and actionable. Traditional pipelines that shuttle raw sensor data to the cloud for processing are slow, expensive, and vulnerable to tampering. Ecosphere’s smart app flips this model on its head.
Instead of pushing data upstream, we bring intelligence to the edge.
The Ecosphere Smart App runs locally on Hbarsuite Smart Nodes, ingesting sensor data from IoT devices, applying AI inference models for real-time validation, scoring each contribution based on usefulness, and issuing token rewards on the spot. It’s a radical new way to incentivize and trust climate data without centralized control.
Decentralized Identity: Every Sensor Has a Name
To build a trustworthy data economy, we must know who is sending data not just what.
That’s why every sensor and smart app instance in Ecosphere is anchored to a W3C-compliant decentralized identifier (DID), registered on-chain using Hedera.
Each data packet is:
- Digitally signed by the sensor’s private key
- Verified against its DID Document (including public key, metadata, and trust score)
- Checked for revocation or tampering
- Logged immutably to Hedera Consensus Service topic
This ensures every byte of data comes from a verifiable source. If a rogue device enters the network or a sensor degrades in accuracy, the smart app can identify and respond autonomously.
AI Inference at the Edge: From Raw Data to Smart Insights
Our smart app doesn’t just validate data; it understands it.
Built-in AI models (using frameworks like TensorFlow Lite or ONNX) run directly on the smart node to:
- Detect anomalies in temperature, humidity, or gas readings
- Classify environmental conditions (e.g. flood risk, pollution severity)
- Assign confidence levels to noisy or ambiguous data
- Filter out fake or low-value submissions before they pollute the chain
By pushing inference to the edge, we reduce latency, preserve privacy, and enable mission-critical applications like disaster alerts or autonomous climate contracts.
Each model’s output is also hashed and logged to ensure model integrity and traceability.
Scoring Logic: Making Every Byte Count
Once a data point is verified and enriched with inference, the Smart App computes a Data Quality Score (DQS) based on:
- Timeliness: Is the data fresh?
- Uniqueness: Is it redundant or filling a gap?
- Accuracy: Does it align with local models or nearby nodes?
- Sensor Grade: What’s the sensor’s rating?
- Location Value: How critical is this geography?
- Trust History: Has this node been reliable?
This score determines how many IQON tokens the contributor earns. Rewards are algorithmically calculated and immediately issued: no waiting, no centralized approval.
And because every reward transaction is signed by the Smart App’s own DID, the entire pipeline is cryptographically verifiable.
